From above, the Wooramel landscape reveals the traces of water across an otherwise arid landscape. The Wooramel is an ephemeral river system, remaining dry for long periods before major rainfall sends floodwater west towards Shark Bay. Across the floodplain, old channels record earlier courses of the river, while newer channels cut through sediments deposited by previous floods. Over time, water has repeatedly shifted, divided and re-formed its path, leaving a network of riverbeds and palaeochannels etched into the earth.
