Fishermen’s friend tells the story of Australians’ love for and symbiotic relationship with the Pelican. Photographed on beautiful Putty Beach in Bouddi National Park on the Central Coast, the photo came from a serendipitous moment. Most of my photography is planned. In this case, I was down at my local beach photographing an incoming storm, with just my 135mm lens. Sitting on the rocks, a Pelican landed in front of me - the first time I had seen this in my 5 years in the bay.

To get a more interesting portrait, I jumped down and sat below the ledge, shooting up to frame the incoming storm behind the Pelican. As I did, a fisherman packing up to avoid the storm dropped a bait fish for the Pelican. The Pelican collected it, went back to the rock ledge, and tossed it in the air before swallowing it whole.
