Archival Cotton Rag Paper

I have visited Skomer Island in Wales three times, each time staying on the island so I could take advantage of waking early and photographing in the first light. It also enabled me to photograph late into the afternoon, when this photograph was taken.

At this time of year, puffins’ bills are brightly coloured, and they spend their time on land breeding and raising young before returning to the sea in August. Over each visit, I started mapping landing points where birds returned with fish to burrows full of hungry pufflings. For this photograph, I chose a burrow against the dark rock cliffs, lowered the camera's exposure and shot a portrait that focused on the fish and the bird's bill, pushing the rest of the scene and bird into the background.
